In 2023, 39.9 million people were living with HIV and 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses. Still, there is no cure for HIV. While antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) are effective in treating HIV, they cause the virus to become latent in immune cells rather than killing it and therefore require consistent administration throughout a person’s lifetime.
The unique nature of the HIV virus presents multiple scientific barriers to finding a cure, but our biggest concern is the way that social barriers hinder the discovery of an effective cure by perpetuating the persistence of HIV and the structural inequalities associated with the disease. Women have historically been underrepresented in HIV cure research, HIV/AIDS has become heavily politicized, and stigma still prevents people from receiving any kind of healthcare.
We are fighting for a cure that does not discriminate, fosters love and acceptance, and restores hope in the communities that are affected by HIV.
